TIPS FOR HVAC SELF-DIAGNOSIS

It’s summertime here in Chicagoland, which means a few things move to the top of the house maintenance totem pole. Yes, making sure your pool is sparkling and your gas grill is in good shape are both important, but not as crucial as this: taking care of your home’s air conditioning unit. The last thing you want to do is come home after a tough day at work or a fun day in the sun to find your A/C is not working properly, and your indoor temperature is warmer than it should be.

So, make sure you pay close attention to your air conditioner; most times (but not always) it will give you a sign that it needs some attention. This attention could amount to a minor repair or a more serious issue that could lead to breakdown, but here are a few troubleshooting tips you can do before you call your Chicagoland HVAC experts at Merts Heating & Air Conditioning:

FIRST THINGS FIRST: CHECK THE THERMOSTAT

Temperature a little high? The very first thing you should do is also the first thing one of our service technicians will do: make sure your thermostat is working properly and set to the temperature that you want.

AIR CONDITIONER NOT COOLING

Is your air conditioner running, but pumping out warm air? Lower the thermostat five degrees. If the unit still does not blow cooler air, this could mean a dirty or faulty condenser or evaporator. Clear any debris from around the condenser and evaporator. If it still is not cooling, your compressor may be bad, or you might have low refrigerant or a refrigerant leak. This may cause frozen coils, which means you need to call your friendly Merts service technician.

DON’T IGNORE LEAKS

An air conditioning leak can turn into a major disaster quickly and cause massive damage to ceilings, walls and anything close to it. A leak can be caused by the aforementioned frozen evaporator coils, which may be the result of a dirty or clogged air filter or lack of refrigerant. You can check and replace the air filter yourself, but you will need to call Merts for a refrigerant check. Leaks can also be caused by blocked condensate drain lines, so flush them periodically to keep them clear.

KEEP MAINTENANCE UP-TO-DATE

Of course, the easiest way to keep your system running great and catch or prevent issues before they happen is to schedule regular A/C maintenance. Merts offers maintenance plans to fit all budgets, and our professionally licensed technicians will quickly determine what needs to be done to get your system running the way it should. So, if you can’t fix it yourself, call Merts today!
